Merit Badge Requirements

Changes in Advancement Requirements for Year 2000

Literacy and Scouting

Literacy is one of the primary goals of BSA. Therefore, the first and foremost requirement for all Merit Badges is to read the appropriate Merit Badge Booklet. While Troop 187 maintains a library of these books, each scout is encouraged to purchase his own. These can be obtained from local Scout Stores or the J.C. Penney mail order catalogue. Ask the Troop librarian for help in obtaining these resources.

After you have finished the Merit Badge the Troop may purchase your book at a price determined by its condition.

Mr. D's Merit Badge Review - This is a spreadsheet listing Richard Diesslin.'s recommendations on each of the current 119 merit badges, listing the number of requirements, difficulty, how long it should take to complete, any prerequisites, and general comments.

The following list of merit badge requirements is current as of January 1, 1999. These requirements should be used for all Merit Badges STARTED after that date. If a Scout is currently working on a Merit Badge under older requirements may complete the Merit Badge using those requirements.

Click here for an Introduction to Merit Badges which describes the process for earning and receiving Merit badges.

If you are interested in proposing a new merit badge or revised requirements for an existing merit badge please CLICK HERE.

A ZIP file of all of the GIFS of the current Merit Badges can be obtained by CLICKING HERE. The ZIP file also contains a text file listing the Merit Badges and the BSA assigned numbers and the file names of the gifs.   The Text file can be viewed by CLICKING HERE.

Within each of the pages
text changes since 1995 have been highlighted with
bold underlining to denote new text and
red italic strikethrough to denote deletions.

A table of Current Merit Badge Pamphlet Revision Dates is also available on this system. The table also includes the BSA Stock Numbers for all current Merit Badge Pamphlets and the dates of the most recent changes to the requirements for each badge.

A table of the URL's for the various Merit Badge pages and graphics is also available.  It also shows the numbers assigned to each Merit Badge by BSA's record system and lists those Merit Badges which have been renamed and/or discontinued recently
