Scout Troop 187 Committee Meeting
April 7, 2001

Present:  Tom Koch, Dick Shaffer, Reid Cornwell, Robyn Cornwell, Everett Thomas, Jerry Rawles, Charlie Simpson

The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m.

 I.                   Approval of 2/7/01 minutes, seconded, and carried unanimously.

II.                Scoutmaster’s Report- Dick Shaffer

A.     Snow Cave Campout:  Ten scouts and seven adults attended. About 50% of the scouts used sleds to carry gear. They were good for younger scouts who could not carry weight of gear and bad for those who did not know how to lash on gear. Going uphill, gear fell off and going downhill, the sleds kept hitting scouts in the leg. Dick would prefer not to use sleds in the future unless scouts are taught how to lash on gear or pack sleds properly.

B.     Backpacking Trip  (April 27-29)

1.      Check Buena Vista area. Colorado Trail (flat away from snow) area would be ideal. Would be nice to find hot springs to enjoy as well.

C.     Order of the Arrow elections

1.      Need to set a date. Someone comes from the lodge and runs the election.

D.   Swim Merit Badge

1.      Dick would like to do it in May. Ev offered that the Rec Center will be

closed May 14th through May 22nd for repairs

            E.   Assistant Scoutmasters

1.      Dick would like to have a meeting before the backpacking campout and

divide up responsibilities. He is very concerned about wasting the time and talents of these people. He would also like to tie training in with the meeting. Currently, the assistant scoutmasters being brought before the committee are: Rick Herwehe, Jon Fredrickson, Lee Edwards, Josh Mirto, John Woods, and David Zajek. He would also like to approach Doug Pearson and Bill Marvin.

2.      After much discussion, all assistant scoutmasters were approved with

the exception of Lee Edwards. However, some were approved conditionally. Josh Mirto needs training. John Woods needs one more training session. David needs: additional training, a complete uniform,  to read the Scoutmaster’s Handbook, and to stop chewing tobacco at the meetings. A reasonable time will be allowed for the above criteria to be met.

3.      In the future, the following criteria must be met in order for an individual

to be an assistant scoutmaster.

a)      Purchase and wear a complete uniform,

b)      Complete at least Fast Start and Youth Protection training,

c)      Read the Scoutmaster’s Handbook, and

d)      Model appropriate behavior and the values of scouting.

 III.             Activities- Tom Koch

A. Summer Camp Update

1.      Tom suggested that an assistant scoutmaster work with the Activities Chairperson in order to know upcoming events/ activities and promote them with the scouts.

B.     COPES

1.      We are online for the COPES program. Once again, we need an assistant

scoutmaster to commit to this activity.  Training will be on the 4th and 5th of May. Tom has received literature on the Tahosa program for younger boys. The additional adult will be Rick Herwehe.

IV.              Fund Raising- Ev Thomas

A.     Christmas Tree sales

1.        Ev has made a fundraising plan and is waiting to hear from Travis.

2.        Ev recommended that we table the discussion until he hears back from Travis.

V.                 Advancement- Reid Cornwell

A.  Boards of Review

1.      The troop had a successful Court of Honor.

2.      The troop is in need of a merit badge counselor for Coin Collecting.

3.      Climbing merit badge counselor will be Brad La Rachelle.

VI.              Equipment- Bill Marvin

A.  Status of equipment

1.      The large gas tank can not be welded. No one will fill it. Maybe it can be made into a cooker.

2.      Bill has not been in the trailer in a while. There are plans to build shelves in May. Jerry Rawles, John Woods, and Bill Snead have all offered to help build shelves.

3.      We currently have a good inventory of equipment. Needs: stacking pots, extra camp kits. Tents are currently in good shape.

4.      Chris Marvin is current Quartermaster.

VII.           Treasurer’s Report- Kate Johnson

1.      Report tabled due to Kate’s absence.

  VIII.   Old Business:

A.  Training (Tom)

1.      Tom committed to putting some training opportunities together for assistant scoutmasters meeting on Thursday, April 19th.

 VIII.        New Business:
