NO AGENDA

Introduction and welcome to new committee members

Ev Thomas- Chaplain
Ernie Harris- Treasurer

Financial Report – Tom Koch

Previous financial information is all wrong. Tom now has checks and is getting a better picture

Travis turned over both the checking account and savings account books to Tom. Unfortunately, there are no more checks as Lori was in the process of looking into changing banks

Checking Account = ~$ 1608.00
Savings Account = ~ $ 9500.00
Currently ~ $9300.00 in reserve for boys, $2000.00 in discretionary fund

Travis, Lori, and Nick are current signers on checks- this needs to be changed and Dick Shaffer needs to be a signer since he is often with boys on outings.

Ernie and Tom will arrange a time to get together to go over books, straighten them out, look into non-profit / tax exempt status.

New Committee – Charlie Simpson

Charlie Ringer and Charlie Simpson have asked Travis Bennett to step

down as chairperson of the committee. He was applauded for his many years of service to the troop and an invitation to continue to work as a member of the committee was extended.

Charlie feels that we must get the committee going in the right direction-

without squabbling, finger pointing, and personality conflicts. He reminded those present that the mission of the committee is to support the troop’s program and be there for the boys’ benefit.

Scoutmaster Issues- Dick Shaffer

Troop not fully chartered- a change of 22 boys to 24 boys has taken place

from January to February. There will probably be 10 more boys in 2000, 10 more in 2001, and so forth. The troop will be experiencing a positive growth.

Program focus: character development, citizenship, physical/ mental

fitness. Need a balance of adventure (outings/ fun), leadership training, and advancement in order to keep boys interested and motivated.

Needs of troop:

Need a full committee- trained volunteers

Financial management- structure, do it right, accurate/ fair bookkeeping, fundraising should be included as it is the "lifeblood" of the troop.

Activities- should be a campout and hike every month on average, should have a natural progression for new boys- hike± cooking on a hike± camping± backpacking, etc.

Training- Dick is looking into Scout Leadership Challenge, which consists of 7 sessions and a campout or could be done in 4 one-hour sessions and then a campout. It is designed to teach leadership skills and should start in April. Senior boys have already been asked to find a good time for this training.

Advancement- Robyn Cornwell has agreed to take this on in an effort to improve record keeping, organize Boards of Review, Courts of Honor, and procure badges in a timely fashion.

Equipment- Terry George has agreed to take this on. Currently we have 11 tents (3 in need of repair) and will probably need 17 by summer. The trailer needs some shelving, the troop’s logo on the outside, and some painting. Terry has offered his shop and tools for this endeavor. Terry also recommended an annual bearing check on trailer and questioned whether the digital camera would be his responsibility. Information on tent repairs was given to him at this time. Dick feels strongly that we need the town to relate to the troop and the troop to the town.

Newsletter- the newsletter continues to be enjoyed and is a great way to get the information out to the boys and their families. We need a digital camera, maybe a donation or through a grant request.

Library- is inactive so far. Most books are out of date, need to replenish. Troop should have a library that consists of more than merit badge books- maybe Audubon guides. Could write a grant for $500.00 and spend $100.00 on updates of merit badge books and add additional resources as need and money arises.

Venture Patrol- was set up last August, is evolving. We have received more information and a video- should include every boy over 14. Concept is good, even as a patrol within the troop, and could be an answer to a tremendous need (high school boys dealing with many pressure, life changes, school as a hostile environment, peers putting down or challenging values) as well as build cohesiveness among the boys. To be successful must have these three elements: 1) Venture Patrol must set the example for the younger boys (uniform, meeting conduct, initiative in earning badges), 2) Venture Patrol members provide instruction to younger scouts (help with Passport to First Class), and 3) Venture Patrol must have high adventure activities to keep them interested. Kids use their "specialty" to teach others- win/win, good for new scout, good for self-concept/ identity of teacher.

Geezer Patrol- Put all the non-scouts in a patrol and get them out of the way. Need to solicit input to make Geezer Patrol work.

Active Chaplain- to teach "on my duty to God and country". Would like to see an active religious award program and someone knowledgeable on program.

Community Affairs & Publicity Person- could be the same person. Someone who would be identified and contacted for flag ceremonies, the Duck Race, Town Clean-Up as well as someone who could get the "good news" out to the public via newspaper, radio, etc.

Current Committee- Charlie Simpson

As it stands, the committee is as follows:

Chairperson: Need to find.
Institutional Representative: Charlie Simpson
Secretary: Need to find. Robyn Cornwell will continue until someone else is found.
Treasurer: Ernie Harris
Outdoor Activities: Tom Koch
Advancement: Robyn Cornwell
Chaplain: Ev Thomas
Training: Brian Wilson
Equipment: Terry George
Fundraising: Need to find.
Community Affairs/ Publicity: Need to find.

Training- Charlie Simpson

How can we do our job better? Need to find a convenient time to get together for training.

Outdoor Activities- Tom Koch

Biathlon- 15 boys signed up to go for archery/ shooting/ snowshoeing/

cross country skiing this weekend. Scouts must be First Class or higher to participate.

Will do a snowcave camping trip in two weeks.

Website is updated regularly with new activities.

Equipment- Terry George

Terry would like of list of current equipment. Paulette Adams has a list from the last trailer inventory done two weeks ago.

The troop may want to consider propane safety checks.

Terry asked if he could make up a "wish list" for equipment. He also wondered why we were not using REI in Denver for equipment. He questioned the one tent with the vestibule and was provided an answer.

Chairperson’s Final Comments- Charlie Simpson

We need input/suggestions for Chairperson position.

He will not be at the April meeting, but will seek a location for the

Wednesday, April 5th meeting. Robyn Cornwell offered to speak with Don Waldera about meeting at Upper Blue again, but Charlie said he would take care of it.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:27 p.m.
