Activity Report- Tom Koch
Snow Cave Campout (3/25/00) Three adults and six boys participated in the snow
caving campout. Freeze-dried food was used for meals and trying to stay dry and warm was
the objective. Some were successful, some were not.
Three Rivers District Biathlon (3/10- 3/12/00) Troop activity with about 70%
attendance. The scouts were able to rifle shoot and try their hand at archery. We took 1st
place in the rifle with show shoes competition. Younger scouts worked toward advancement
to 1st Class. The weekend finished with a hike to the "Ice Cave" and
a blizzard on Vail Pass.
OA Section Conclave (4/14-4/16/00) Our two active OA scouts attended the
conclave and learned more about OA, participated in Indian dancing, and learned how to
beat an authentic Indian drum.
Pack 187 and 186 Crossovers (5/2/00) The crossover is an important way of
supplying the unit with new recruits and volunteers. They will start on the trail to 1st
class with a hike on May 6th led by the Venture Patrol. The eight new scouts
received an orientation and their "red books" to document their progress in
scouting.
Three Rivers District Camporee (5/19-5/20/00) This event will take place at
Bogan Flats, near Marble. The theme will be lumberjacks and forestry with opportunities
for boys to compete in hatchet throwing and crosscutting. There will be an OA Call-Out and
the new boys elected will be introduced to OA. Service hours may be earned in helping
clean up the campground for the summer season.
Court of Honor (5/22/00) Currently in the planning stage. All are invited to
attend. Paulette Adams is planning the event and as usual it will be fun for all.
District Committee Meeting (5/4/00) Leave by 4:30 for Glenwood.
District Roundtable Meeting (5/11/00) Leave by 4:30 for Glenwood
Venture Patrol Raft Trip (6/1-6/8/00) Green River, Utah. Scouts will be rafting
Desolation and Gray Canyons for a total of 81 miles. Five scouts and four adults will be
going. Scouts need to be at least 1st Class and have the Swimming, Canoeing,
Camping, and First Aid merit badges. Tour Permits and Class 3 physical for each
participant must be obtained prior to the trip.
Medicine Mountain Camp (7/30-8/5/00) Currently looking into a bus to carry
scouts and gear.
Philmont is sold out for both 2000 and 2001. Reservations for Philmont 2002 must
be made on October 28th. It is a twelve-day experience that will cost
approximately $600.00 per scout.
The troop has a new address:
- Boy Scout Troop 187
- PO Box 6201
- Breckenridge, CO 80424
Treasurers Report- Ernie Harris and Tom Koch
Currently have $11,746.00 in First Bank. They would like to leave bank
Accounts as they are and as much money in savings as possible. Move funds from savings
into checking as needed.
Checks have been ordered and will be double stubbed. Statements will sent to the new
box.
All summer camp monies need to be collected as a check for $4600.00 is due to Medicine
Mountain by the end of May. A motion was made to send an invoice to the parents of each
scout to collect summer camp fees. Motion passed.
Dues- current budget would dictate that dues be in the $80 to $100 range.
A motion was made to charge every boy $90.00 for dues for 2000. Motion carried. Another
motion was made to add dues to the camp invoice being sent to parents. It passed with the
following modification; an accounting to each boy and his parents will be made about the
status of his individual account in the camp/ dues invoice with options to pay one, both,
or none out of that individual account.
$9289.00 in reserve for boys. Ernie will check with a tax accountant and check on
possible point system.
Need to pay Tom for tents he has purchased on his credit card. We currently have a
two-tent credit with Cabelas and we need to purchase 4 new ones (total of 6 new tents).
Motion was made and carried unanimously.
Advancement- Reid Cornwell
Lee Edwards is currently in the process of updating the records of the scouts who
crossed over in 1999.
Rick Herwehe (New Patrol Assistant Leader) will be assisting the new
Boys in the Hawk Program, similar to the Passport to 1st Class Program. It
is camp driven with a local component that will begin on May 6th.
Merit badge earning has dropped off drastically due to boys having to ask merit badge
counselors for supervision. Reid would like to see an instructional component to each
meeting that will meet the requirement of a merit badge.
Training- Brian Wilson
Brian stated that he had just received information and needed time to look it over. Ev
requested that he get it scheduled as soon as possible.
Equipment- Terry George
Terry said there was a need for equipment for both the camporee and the rafting trip.
Present equipment can handle both events as this time.
Tom said we will probably need to be prepared for 30-32 boys after the 2001 crossover.
Ev asked Terry to have a list of needs and costs by the June meeting. Terry asked about
the inventory and was told to contact Paulette Adams. Terry volunteered to change out
leaking propane tanks.
Dick interjected that he has supplied the "new boys" with a personal
equipment list in the April newsletter. Jerry was very concerned about scouts who could
not afford uniforms, dues, and equipment. He was assured that scouts could get uniforms in
the "Uniform Closet" at a greatly reduced price, earn dues through fundraisers,
and qualify for scholarships for activities or equipment. The Scoutmaster will determine
an emergency need on a case by case basis.
Publicity/Fundraising- Travis Bennett
Travis was unable to attend so this will be addressed at the June meeting.
Scouts will be rolling coins on May 10th. Money earned will go into the
reserve and be used towards Boy Scout/ Cub Scout Camporee in September.
We do need to discuss Christmas Tree Sales and the committee decided to meet on
May 17th at 7:00 p.m. to discuss this issue. Reid and Tom volunteered to write
an agenda for this meeting.
Institutional Representatives Report- Ev Thomas
Scout Sunday - Ev would like to see scouts as ushers, flag bearers, and
presenters of the charter to the church. Jerry Rawles and Charlie Simpson will help
organize. It would be a great service project for the scouts.
Father Dyer Clean-Up (5/13/00)- Ev has a list of clean-up projects for the
Scouts. The church will provide the supplies.
Storage space- Ev says the church is beginning to plan for additions/
renovations. He wondered if the scouts need a storage space included in those plans. Dick
Shaffer volunteered to get some numbers and ideas to him.
Other Business- Open
Brian Wilson proposed a motion to accept a policy to allow for excused
Absences, particularly relating to family vacations, organized school activities,
illness, other sanctioned sporting events, church activities, and other activities that
may prevent a scout from attending a meeting or activity. After much discussion, the
question was called. The motion did not pass. This motion illustrated the need to talk
about attendance and attendance standards. It was agreed that attendance policy would be
an agenda item at the June meeting.
