Scout Troop 187 Committee Meeting September 9, 1999 Present: Nick Payne, John Fredrickson, Lori Norton, Reid Cornwell, Dick Shaffer, Tom Koch, and Robyn Cornwell. Chairperson: Lori Norton Initial Discussion:There was some question about who is able to vote at committee meetings. It was generally agreed that you could vote if your name was on the charter. Tom Koch has contacted Western Council about reimbursement for two campers who were paid for but did not attend. He has not received a response. 2. Tom Koch has been reimbursed for trailer, roof racks, and equipment purchased for the scouts. 3. Terry George has offered the use of his shop for shelf construction and painting for the trailer. 4. A motion was made to purchase a hitch lock and tags for the trailer. The motion carried. Tom will purchase and be reimbursed for these items. 5. Tom had made a reservation for Troop 187 at Medicine Mountain Scout Camp in South Dakota for the summer of 2000. O.A. Greager may not be available next summer and Tom thought it would be prudent to make other arrangements. The committee agreed that Medicine Mountain would be the camping experience next summer. This was a form Dick Shaffer designed for the bike trip to delineate responsibilities of parents attending the trip. Dick said he would be glad to develop a form (Troop Activity Plan Checklist) that would be filled out for each troop activity to clearly spell out jobs/ responsibilities of chaperoning adults. It was generally agreed that all adults who attend a scouting activity should have a responsibility to the event. A motion was made that the scoutmaster decides who could or couldn't attend an activity. This motion was tabled until Dick actually develops a form. Dick would also like to survey parents to obtain an accurate accounting of troop assets. He planned to develop a survey and distribute it at the Court of Honor on September 13th. Christmas Tree Sales- Lori Norton stated that if the troop was selling Christmas trees this year, they needed to be ordered ASAP. Last year, the troop ordered 20 of the 7-9 foot trees and 125 of the 5-7 foot trees. A lengthy discussion followed about the merits of the fund-raiser. It was acknowledged that boys need opportunities to earn money to pay for camp and other activities. Some concerns were voiced about scouting programs for fundraising. It was generally agreed that tree sales without scouting objectives was undesirable. A suggestion was made to incorporate a camping experience and merit badge (Salesmanship, Forestry, winter camping) opportunities with the fund-raiser. A motion was made put it to the boys and parents at the Court of Honor. It was felt that a positive presentation, possibly with a chart showing how much each boy had earned during the 1998 tree sales, would be advantageous. Parents would also need to know that they will have to pay for more if this fund-raiser is not done. The motion passed. If the scouts and their parents approved of a 1999 tree sale, an order of 10- 15 7 to 9' trees and 100 5 to 7' trees would ensue. The scouts would harvest approximately 75 of the lodgepole pines with a national forest permit. Trailer issues- shelving and painting. (Tabled until October meeting) Should we go to summer camp in South Dakota next summer? O.A. Greager is not available. (Addressed in Old Business). Boy Scout/ Cub Scout Camporee- Finalize details. Dick said he would consolidate a list of attendees at the Court of Honor. He would also get a list of drivers, a duty roster with menus (David and Bob doing menus), and solidify lists and responsibilities. Tom said he would have a headcount from the Cub Scout Pack on Tuesday and that each "cubbie" would be paying $5.00 to defray costs. Nick Payne reminded the committee that his barber friend was contributing a quarter from each haircut to the scouts. It would probably cover food for the Camporee. The scouts have developed a schedule of activities. Nancy Redner will be reserving the campsites early on Friday. The troop is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. departure on Friday, September 17th and will break camp at 9:00 am Sunday the 19th. Annual Planning Session? When? Input from PLC? (October 30th). We still need a Secretary. Has anyone contacted the volunteers? Robyn Cornwell stated that she would share the position with Nancy Shaffer and Kathy Davis. The split had not been clarified at that point, but Robyn agreed to take notes for the next couple of meetings until it was decided. Merit badge counselors list. Travis will volunteer to complete this. Get applications to him. Dick said to table this until after the parent surveys are returned. Nick Payne resigned as Scoutmaster. ( Effective 9/9/99) After a brief farewell from Nick and appreciative comments from the committee as to the time and energy he has put into scouting, a need for a smooth transition to a new scoutmaster was discussed. Dick Shaffer will be asked to be the new scoutmaster by the charter organization. Nick would like to take over the new Venture Patrol. A brief discussion ensued comparing and contrasting a venture patrol (all the discipline of an ordinary scout troop) and a venture crew (more of an "independent study" philosophy). It was agreed that Travis Bennett would make the announcement to the scouts about Nick's resignation at the appropriate time. Court of Honor- Dick stated that plans were about set for the ceremony. A pot luck dinner will precede the awards. A campfire with skits and singing will follow. He would like to see a Scout of the Week plaque be started. He also felt that Steven Chandler should be recognized as the outstanding scout at camp this past summer. It was agreed that a nice compass from the Scout Shop would be an appropriate award. Robyn Cornwell agreed to pick one up in the $15 to $20 range. . UPCOMING EVENTS:
